Mozilla Will Immortalize Evangelical Users
by Jason Hahn

Dedicated users of the Firefox Web browser will have a shot at being written into the very source code of the next version of the browser, Firefox 2.0.  In observance of the Mozilla Foundation’s three-year anniversary, on July 15 the organization announced this offer to users who convince their friends to download Firefox before September 15.  If they succeed, both the user and the friend that signs up will have their names written into the Firefox 2.0 source code.

The statement released by the Mozilla Foundation states: “Share Firefox with a friend.  If your friend downloads Firefox before Sept. 15, you’ll both be immortalized in Firefox 2.0”

Firefox 2.0 is slated to release sometime in September, which is close to the time when Microsoft plans to release Internet Explorer 7.0.  Big changes to the browser are not expected in the 2.0 version, but there will be an integrated spell-checker, enhanced search capabilities, and an anti-phishing warning feature.  This last feature will present a clear pop-up to alert the user of a site that poses a threat.

Since its launch in November of 2004, Firefox has garnered increasing popularity and loyalty.  They currently have about a 12.93% share of the browser market, while Microsoft’s IE maintains a strong (but faltering) 83.05%, according to the latest numbers released by OneStat, an analytics firm.

Firefox 3.0 is expected to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2007.
