Spam Eats Up One Hour Per Day
by Jason Hahn

According to a “Spam Personality” survey conducted in May by Reflexion Network Solutions, a typical employee spends up to an hour per day deleting spam e-mails.  This translates into about 12.5% of lost work time for someone who works 1,824 hours per year.

The survey also found that false positives (or legitimate e-mails that are mistakenly filtered as spam) can result in the loss of a job, damaged relationships, and missed flights, among other mishaps.

Participants indicated that they receive between 50 and 200 e-mails everyday.  Twenty percent of these e-mail users said that 50 to 74% of all the e-mail they receive is spam.

Only one in every 141 e-mails is infected with a virus.  This is a huge improvement from last May’s one in every 38 e-mails.  Reflexion indicated that this was due to the fact that “hackers have turned from mass-mailing attacks to targeted Trojan horses.”

Popular hoaxes and chain letters received in e-mail inboxes included the “Olympic torch,” “Hotmail hoax,” “Justice for Jamie,” “Bonsai kitten,” and “Budweiser frogs screensaver,” among others.

Reflexion Network Solutions is a service provider for anti-spam solutions based in Woburn, Massachusetts.

Though I am no fan of Spam, I find it hard to believe that an entire hour per day is spent deleting it. I average approximately 300 email messages per day, of which about 290 are complete spam. However, I spend no more than about 5 min per day deleting it. I could understand that a full hour would be needed if someone looked at, and read every message that came into their inbox, but spam can certainly be identified without such a thorough evaluation. I must admit, however, that I spend far less time deleting spam that I do watching T.V. commercials, which I cannot opt-out from.
