U.K. Continues Strong Online Ad Spending
by Jason Hahn

Online ad spending in the U.K. is expected to reach $6.4 billion in 2008, after reaching $5.3 billion in 2007, according to eMarketer.  This will reflect a growth of 27%, and will once again place the U.K. atop the list of European countries in terms of online ad spending.

eMarketer expects growth in the U.K. to remain in the double digits through 2010, and projects that online ad spending will reach $8.7 billion in 2012.

Of the $6.4 billion expected to be spent on online ad spending in 2008, $3.8 billion is expected to be spent on search advertising.  This figure is projected to reach $5.2 billion in 2012.

Recent economic turmoil aside does not seem to have dampened online ad spending prospects in the U.K.

GroupM, a “leading global media investment management operation” according to its Web site, estimates that 18.3% of all advertising and marketing spending in the U.K. will be directed towards the Internet.  It also expects spending on online initiatives to exceed the spending on television advertising as soon as 2009.

PricewaterhouseCoopers and Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe released figures in August 2007 indicating that the U.K. spent 104.09 Euros per Internet user on online advertising, the most of any major country in Europe.  Denmark (72.42 Euros), Germany (54.36 Euros), Netherlands (51.42 Euros), and France (48.29 Euros) rounded out the top five on the list.

We see a lot of customers from the UK at Basicdig. We've increased our spending on advertising targeted at UK users quite a bit over the past year. The one thing I notice is that UK users tend to visit the site several times before making a purchase and usually do not make a purchase until a week or two after their first visit to the site.
