U.K. Spends Most Time Online
by Jason Hahn

A study conducted by comScore World Metrix found that Web users in the U.K. spend more time online than users from any other country in the world. Britain’s crummy weather is partially to blame.

The average Web user in the U.K. spends 34.4 hours on the Internet each month, the most in the world. Users in Sweden rank second with 31.7 hours on the Web each month. American users were third, with the average user spending 31.4 hours online each month. Users in Spain were fourth on the list, spending 30.6 hours on the Internet each month.

Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe, said that the two primary reasons for the U.K.’s lead in time spent online were the increased subscription to broadband connections and the bad weather in the country.

The average European spends 24.1 hours online each month.

Although Germany has Europe’s largest online population, the average German only spends 22.6 hours on the Internet per month.

In terms of Internet penetration, the Netherlands were first on the list with an 83% penetration rate, followed by Norway and Sweden, each with a 70% penetration rate.

Russia came in last on the list with only 11% penetration.

On average there were 122 million Europeans online each day in April. There were 114 million Web users online in the U.S. each day during the same month.

Google sites garnered the most page views in the majority of the countries, while Microsoft sites were second.

Internet users included in the study were 15 years-old and older. Only the 16 largest European markets were studied, and only online time at home and work was considered.
