Firefox Is Popular In Europe
by Jason Hahn

According to recent data released by French research firm XiTi, 24.1% of Web users in Europe browsed on a Firefox browser during the week ending March 11, 2007. This is a large jump from the week ending April 14, 2006, when Firefox was used by 19.4% of Web users in Europe.

Slovenia leads the way with a 44.5% Firefox usage rate, while Finland (41.3%), Croatia (36.5%), Germany (36.2%), and Slovakia (35.3%) also showed strong market penetration.

The Czech Republic showed the largest increase from the last time this data was collected, during the week ending November 26, 2006. Back in November, 26.7% of users in the country used Firefox. Last month, however, this number jumped to 31.5%, which is an 18% increase.

Of the 30 European nations studied, only five had experienced decreased Firefox usage rates: Hungary (-12%), Denmark (-11%), The Netherlands (-5%), Estonia (-3%), and Italy (-3%).

France had a usage rate of 22.3%, while the U.K. showed a usage rate of 18.0%, and Spain had 15.7% of its Web users browse with Firefox.

Oceania (i.e. Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and parts of the Malay Archipelago) has the highest Firefox penetration at 24.8%. That number increased by 1.4 percentage points since November.

Europe follows behind with 24.1%, while North America is third with 15.1%, Africa is fourth with 13.1%, and South America and Asia are tied for fifth with 11.9%.
