YouTube Slaps Facebook
by Jason Hahn

YouTube’s latest addition will be seen as a slap in the Facebook.  This is because YouTube has added a group called “Colleges on YouTube” to its list of user Groups.  The page touts the new group as a place where students can “see the highlights of last weekend’s game (or last night’s party).”

This places YouTube in direct contention with Facebook, which has long been the social network of choice for campus-based interaction.

The “Colleges on YouTube” group requires an .edu email address in order to join.  Current members of the site can change their email address in order to become eligible to join their college’s group.

“It’s easier than ever to share videos with friends at your college on YouTube – join up and add videos to the pool.  You can also start or join groups within your college, to hook up with others who have the same interests,” the site explains.

This should come as a blow to Facebook, who currently does not have any video sharing features.  Though the social network recently added a “Notes” feature, which also allows users to feed posts from their external blogs, the feature currently does not support video displaying capability.

The lack of this video functionality will be the driving factor in YouTube’s favor.  It presents big potential, and is a sharp move by the video sharing site.

Facebook now has a big hole to dig out of if it ever wants to get into the video sharing game.

This slap dealt by YouTube could be amplified if Facebook users choose to share their YouTube videos if Facebook eventually allows for the embedding of video code into their users’ “Notes” entries.

The social network recently made a new adjustment of its own, though it is not video related.  Each user’s welcome page now displays a news feed with updates about their friends, including relationship status changes, new friend connections, and wall messages, among a few other things.

A mini-feed is also displayed on a user’s profile page, listing recent changes to his/her profile.
