California Leads the Blogosphere
by Jason Hahn

The latest figures from Sysomos show that more than half of bloggers in June fell into a single age bracket, the gender split was slightly tipped toward the fairer sex and one state ruled all other states/provinces – by far.

The company analyzed more than 100 million blog posts that provided ages, genders and location information to arrive at their findings.

When it came to age distribution, 53.3 percent of all bloggers were in the 21-35 range. This is unsurprising, according to Sysomos, which notes that this group grew up during the blogging “revolution.”

The next largest age group of bloggers were 20 years old or younger, accounting for 20.2 percent of all bloggers during June. Bloggers between 36-50 years of age accounted for 19.4 percent, while bloggers who were at least 51 years old made up 7.1 percent of the month's total.

Sysomos also found that the blogosphere was almost evenly split between males and females. Of the blogs analyzed, 50.1 percent belonged to female bloggers, while 49.1 percent belonged to male bloggers.

Americans hog most of the air in the blogosphere, with 29.22 percent of all bloggers located in the U.S. in June. The U.K. followed with 6.75 percent, while Japan claimed 4.88 percent.

Brazil was fourth with 4.19 percent, trailed by Canada with 3.93 percent, Germany with 3.34 percent, Italy with 3.21 percent, Spain with 3.14 percent, France with 2.87 percent and Russia with 2.31 percent.

Australia (2.22 percent), India (2.14 percent), Sweden (2.05 percent), Malaysia (1.70 percent) and the Netherlands (1.69 percent) rounded out the list.

Sysomos notes that while this list of countries ranked by the number of their bloggers closely mirrors the list of Twitter users by country, the biggest different was activity by U.S. users. While more than half of the world's tweets were from U.S. Twitter users, less than a third of the world's bloggers were from the U.S.

When the company zoomed in even further, it found that California led all states/provinces in the number of bloggers located in its boundaries, with 14.1 percent of the total from North America. New York was a distant second with 7.16 percent, followed by Ontario with 5.59 percent, Colorado with 5.25 percent, Texas with 4.37 percent, Pennsylvania with 4.34 percent, Florida with 4.25 percent, Washington with 3.39 percent, Illinois with 2.64 percent and Georgia with 2.09 percent.

Being that I live in Colorado, it is great to see that we are in the top 5 of bloggers in North America. Any bloggers from Colorado if you like, please get in touch with me. I would love to share experiences with you!
