Google Not as Trusted
by Jason Hahn

Google is suffering from “big company syndrome,” according to Dr. Larry Ponemon, founder of the Ponemon Institute.

The Ponemon Institute, research organization focusing on “responsible information, privacy and security management practices in business and government,” according to its Web site, and the privacy certification organization TRUSTe, released their annual list of the “Most Trusted Companies for Privacy” on Monday.

Google, which ranked 10th on the list last year and in 2006, was not found among the top 20 most trusted companies for privacy on this year’s list.

Dr. Ponemon put Google in the same ship as Microsoft, citing their big names as the primary thing keeping them off the top 20 list.

“People figure that if you're big and collecting data, there must be an issue,” he said.

The list, along with last year’s rankings, is:

1.  American Express (1)
2.  eBay (8)
3.  IBM (3)
4.  Amazon (5)
5.  Johnson & Johnson (6)
6.  Hewlett Packard (16)
6.  U.S. Postal Service (7)
7.  Procter & Gamble (9)
8.  Apple (new)
9.  Nationwide (9)
10. Charles Schwab (2)
11. USAA (15)
12. Intuit (19)
13. WebMD (12)
14. Yahoo (new)
15. Facebook (new)
16. Disney (15)
16. AOL (4)
17. Verizon (new)
18. FedEx (new)
19. US Bank (17)
20. Dell (13)
20. eLoan (11)
