Google Gains in October
by Jason Hahn

Google had another good month in October, according to comScore and Hitwise.  Though their figures are different, they are agreed upon Google’s continued display of growth and strength.

According to comScore’s monthly qSearch analysis,
  • Google claimed 63.1 percent of the entire U.S. search market in October 2008.  This reflected an increase from September’s 62.9 percent, and an even larger increase from its 58.5 percent share last October.
  • Yahoo! handled 20.5 percent of the search market in October, an increase from its 20.2 percent share in September.  However, this reflects a noticeable decrease in its share compared to last year when Yahoo! held 22.9 percent of the search market.
  • Microsoft claimed an 8.5 percent share of the search market in October.  The search engine’s share remained unchanged from September, though it reflected a decline from its 9.7 percent share last October.
  • Ask.com had a 4.2 percent market share in October, a decline from its 4.3 percent share in September, and a larger decline from its 4.7 percent share last year.
  • AOL LLC finished October with a 3.7 percent market share, a decline from its 4.1 percent share in September.  The Time Warner Network held a 4.2 percent share last October, before AOL LLC was broken out of the partnership.

comScore notes that 12.6 billion searches were conducted in October, a 7 percent increase from the 11.8 billion searches conducted in September.  Last year, 10.5 billion searches were conducted.

Hitwise’s figures vary, though the rankings are the same.
According to Hitwise,
  • Google laid claim to 71.70 percent of the U.S. search market in October, an increase from September’s 71.16 percent share.  Last October, Google held 64.49 percent of the search market.
  • Yahoo! held 17.74 percent of the search market in October, a decline from its 18.06 percent share in September, and an even sharper drop-off from its 21.65 percent share last year.
  • Microsoft claimed 5.40 percent of the market in October, an increase from its 5.36 percent share in the previous month, but a decline from its 7.42 percent share last October.
  • Ask.com held 3.53 percent of the search market in October, a decline from its 3.63 percent share in September, and an even larger decline from its 4.76 percent share last October.

Both comScore and Hitwise show figures that indicate Google’s continued growth and success at the expense of the four search engines below it.
