by Jason Hahn

Recent numbers released by comScore Media Metrix indicates that Google was the most visited online property in Canada in January, its first time atop the list.  The search giant took the honor away from Microsoft, which ranked second.

Google Sites, which ranked second on the list in December of 2007, attracted 22.4 million unique visitors in January 2008, edging out Microsoft Sites by about 16,000 visitors.  Yahoo! Sites held onto its third spot on the list with 16.5 million visitors, followed by Facebook with 15.3 million visitors, and eBay with 13.9 million visitors.

Wikipedia Sites (11.7 million), AOL LLC (spun off from Time Warner; 10.7 million), Yellow Pages Group (9.7 million), Amazon Sites (9.5 million), and Apple Inc. (8.7 million) rounded out the top 10.

The topic of taxes was the top gaining category in Canada from December to January, growing 44% from month-to-month.  Retail – Health Care was the second top gaining Web category, with a growth of 34%, followed by Hotels/Resorts, which grew 32%.

Travel site Softvoyage.com was the top gaining Web site in Canada, attracting 53% more unique visitors in January compared to December.  Workopolis.com grew 49% in January, while Monster Worldwide grew 41%.  Continuing with the career-related theme, JobBank.gc.ca was fourth on this list with a unique audience 40% larger in January compared to December.  Canada Revenue Agency was fifth with a growth of 38%.
