Yahoo Trumps Google…in Japan
by Jason Hahn

According to comScore World Metrix, Yahoo! finished above Google to be hailed as the top Japanese online property in October 2007, in terms of unique visitors.  Yahoo! sites attracted over 41.3 million Japanese users during the month, or about 76.6% of the entire online population there.  Google sites were second with a unique audience of 31.7 million, or about 58.7% of the total Web population in Japan.  Microsoft sites (29.4 million) were third.

Rakuten Inc. (28.5 million), NTT Group (25.7 million), FC2 Inc. (24.6 million), Nifty Corp. (22.8 million), Livedoor (22.5 million), Wikipedia sites (21.1 million), and GMO Internet Group (19.3 million) rounded out the top 10 list.

Iza.ne.jp and Jiji.com saw increases in its unique audience of 60% and 57%, respectively, compared to the previous month, thanks to a defense ministry payoff scandal.  Nintendo.co.jp saw its audience grow 36% from September to October 2007, while Nikkansports.com experienced a 35% growth in its audience, thanks to Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.
