Women Taking Over Our World?
by Ashley Terranova

Kate Thorp, CEO of Real Girls Media

Tanya Alvarez, President of ConnectingMoms.com & BlinkAds

Lindsay Mure, President of AdFemme.com

Carole Caliendo, VP of Marketing for ClassesUSA.com

Amy Sheridan, President of Blue Phoenix Marketing

Carrie Stec, Regional Vice President for Q Interactive (Coolsavings.com)

Joy Miskovich, President of OfferWeb.com

These are just a few of the women making waves in our industry today. But, why is this important?

AdFemme.com features the “Ad Femme of the Month”, an interview with a successful woman in interactive advertising, each month. Every interview includes the question: On a scale from 1 – 10 how do you think the women in our industry are treated? -10 being the best and 1 being the worst. Why?

Every woman interviewed so far answered: “8” – most say that women are treated fairly and with respect, but there is still an air of male domination.

An “8” could seem like a good rating to many people, but the women I spoken to feel there is room for improvement. So what can we do to get to “10”?

AdFemme.com’s President, Lindsay Mure, had some ideas on how to improve the rating:

“First, we need to give ourselves a 10! We all know that women work hard, are very detail oriented, can juggle several tasks at once, and successfully manage employees. Unfortunately, our feelings of inadequacy shine through, and our insecurities hold us back from moving to the next level. By giving ourselves a 10 we automatically start acting like we deserve a 10 - and will show to others that we do!

Also, women are naturally good at networking and using their resources… that is why we built the networking room and member profiles for the women in our AdFemme.com community. Ladies, we should use our networking and support systems to grow our businesses, get new clients and publishers, find new jobs, get funding, etc. – the guys have their “old boys network” – we have AdFemme.com!”

Do what to men think about the increase of female business owners, VPs and co-workers? Were they afraid, anxious, happy or upset?
AdFemme.com asked the men in our industry to speak up in their May 2006 newsletter. Most of the men interviewed expressed their appreciation for the women they work with and for; some said that women are a necessary part of the ad community because of the different perspective we bring to business. More women, more power, more networking, more growth! So will women take over “Our Interactive Ad World”? Let’s see what happens in 2007!

Happy Holidays!
