Career Sites Grow in Recession
by Jason Hahn

According to recent figures released by comScore, career services and development Web sites saw their audience grow 10 percent in June compared to the same month last year.

More than 65.2 million unique visitors made their way to these sites in June, up 10 percent from 59.0 million in June 2008. Of the top 10 career resource sites, seven of them experienced double-digit growth during the year.

CareerBuilder led the way with 21.7 million unique visitors in June, but experienced a 1 percent decline from the 22.0 million visitors it attracted in the same month last year.

Yahoo! HotJobs was second on the list with 17.9 million unique visitors, up 23 percent from 14.5 million in June of the previous year.

Monster was third with 14.5 million visitors, reflecting an increase of 6 percent from the 13.6 million visitors it lured last year.

Meanwhile, Indeed was fourth on the list with 8.0 million, a 59 percent increase from the 5.0 million unique visitors it attracted in June 2008.

Job.com Sites drew 7.4 million visitors in June, a 46 percent increase from the 5.0 million visitors it attracted in the same month last year.

SnagAJob (4.7 million, up 48 percent), Simply Hired (3.9 million visitors, up 35 percent), JobsOnline.net (3.0 million, up 31 percent), OPM (2.8 million, up 184 percent) and BrassRing.com (2.0 million, down 11 percent) rounded out the top 10 list of career resource Web sites in June.

“Job and career-related resources continue to be one of the fastest-growing categories online, which is not surprising given the current state of the economy and the number of people seeking job opportunities and career advice,” said Jeff Hackett, senior vice president.

“Certainly with millions of Americans reevaluating their careers right now there is opportunity for continued growth and innovation in this segment of the online marketplace.”

The most searched occupation on career service and development sites was customer service with 273,310 searches in June, followed by warehouse with 257,484 searches.

Sales (216,784), receptionist (178,787), medical assistant (161,232), clerical (149,728), construction (144,554), driver (132,947), retail (127,751) and security (107,219) rounded out the list of the top 10 most searched occupations.
