Nielsen and Hitwise Agree on the Obvious
by Jason Hahn

According to the latest figures released by both Nielsen Online and Hitwise, Google held on to its spot atop the search mountain.

Nielsen Online indicates that 5.1 billion queries were conducted on Google Search in the U.S., giving it 62.0% of the market in April 2008.  This reflects year-over-year growth of 35.4%.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Search handled 1.4 billion queries in April, giving it 17.5% of the search market.  This reflects a year-over-year decline of 3.4%.

MSN/Windows Live Search took care of 796 million queries, giving it a market share of 9.7%.  This reflects year-over-year growth of 30.0%.

AOL Search ranked fourth, handling 352 million searches in April.  This gave it a market share of 4.3%, while its share of searches declined 5.1% year-over-year.

Ask.com took the fifth spot, with 171 million queries conducted, giving it a 2.1% share of all searches in April.  This reflects year-over-year growth of 35.8%.

Meanwhile, Hitwise had identical rankings for the top three search engines, but pegged shares at different figures.  Google was still number one according to Hitwise, with 67.90% of all searches in the U.S.  This reflected an increase from March’s 67.25% share, as well as last April’s 65.26% share.

Yahoo! was second, handling 20.28% of all searches in April, which was virtually identical to its 20.29% share in March.  Last April’s market share was 20.73%.

MSN was third with 6.26% of all searches, a decline from March’s 6.65%, and a further decline from last April’s 7.77%.

Ask.com, not AOL, was ranked fourth according to Hitwise.  The search engine handled 4.17% of all searches in April, an increase from March’s 4.09%, and a further increase from last April’s 3.69% share.
