Mobile Entertainment Has a Bright Future
by Jason Hahn

Worldwide revenues from mobile entertainment are expected to reach $64.8 billion by 2012, an impressive increase from 2007’s $20.7 billion figure.  According to Juniper Research, the growing penetration of 3G handsets, and the pervasiveness of flashier 2.5G handsets (think iPhone) will enable the growth in mobile entertainment that is projected.

Juniper foresees mobile music to be the source of $17.5 billion of total mobile entertainment revenue in 2012.  This figure was around $9 billion in 2007.  Mobile gaming revenues are expected to reach $16 billion by 2012 (almost $5 billion in 2007), and mobile TV revenues are expected to $11.9 billion by 2012 ($1.4 billion in 2007).

These figures line up somewhat closely with projections made by Informa Telecoms & Media in February 2007.  Informa expects total worldwide mobile entertainment revenues to reach $38.1 billion by 2011.  Mobile music will make up $13.6 billion of this total, while revenues from mobile games will reach $7.2 billion.  Mobile video is expected to be the source of $6.5 billion by 2011, while revenues from mobile images are expected to reach $4.3 billion.

The mobile market is becoming increasingly attractive for all markets around the world.  With Google set to mix things up a bit in the mobile pool (and recently getting an important foothold in Japan), it will be interesting to monitor how the landscape evolves in the coming years.  As the online video market matures, the next frontier seems to be the mobile realm, which currently lacks leadership in just about every aspect.
