Healthy Black Friday for Online Retailers
by Jason Hahn

According to recent comScore figures, consumers spent $531 million on online non-travel purchases on Black Friday, a 22% increase from last year’s figure. For the month of November through the day after Thanksgiving, consumers spent $9.36 billion on these online purchases. This compares favorably to last year’s $7.98 billion figure for the same time period.

Online spending on Thanksgiving also rose from last year to this year. Last week, consumers spent $270 million on Thanksgiving day, a 29% jump from last year’s $210 million total.

Video games, game consoles, and accessories saw a huge increase in consumer appeal this year.

Nielsen Online also released supportive numbers for this year’s Black Friday online activity. The research firm’s report indicated that online traffic to its Holiday eShopping Index increased 10% compared to last year’s number. This year, Black Friday online traffic to retailers in the index (which includes more than 120 online retailers) saw 21.2 million unique visitors shopping online on turkey day, a favorable increase from last year’s 19.2 million unique visitors.

Web traffic to sites in the index grew 12% year-over-year on Black Friday last year.

Nielsen Online’s Brand Association Map found that shopping incentives, expected shopping experiences, Macy’s, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Sears, Nintendo Wii, plasma televisions, and Elmo toys were popular discussion topics on blogs and online forums.
