E-Mail is Addicting
by Jason Hahn

AOL’s third annual "E-Mail Addiction" survey shows that e-mail has seeped into just about every crevice of our lives, including our vacations.

The survey indicates that the average e-mail user checks their inboxes about five times a day, while 59% of those with mobile devices use them to check their inboxes every time they receive a new message. Of those owning mobile devices, 43% keep their devices near their bed so they can hear the notification if they receive a new message.

About 40% of the 4,025 American respondents ages 13 and over say that it is "very" or "somewhat" important to plan their vacations with e-mail access in mind. Eighty-three percent say they check their inboxes at least once a day while on vacation.

Many e-mail users check their inboxes in bed, in the bathroom, while driving, and 12% even check their e-mail in church.

"As the survey data shows, portable devices - like email itself - are becoming more prevalent and easier to use. Because you can access email services like AOL from virtually anywhere and on almost any wireless device, it is easier to stay connected to work, home, family and friends through email -- and instant messaging as well -- than any other form of communication," said Regina Lewis, AOL Online Consumer Advisor.

In addition, the study found men to be slightly more prone to being addicted to e-mail then the fairer sex.

Cell phones and email are contenders for the most dehumanizing advancements to technology in recent times.

Each of these technologies is personalized and on the face of it should accomplish results that are anything but dehumanizing…and yet they never go away, seemingly never turn off and it is considered social rude to ignore them or even delay a response. We have socialized a new efficacy, even a convince, the cost has been in emotional capital. Peace of mind is harder to come by when all are devices are beeping buzzing and blathering

Like lots of people who sit in front of a computer all day, I am addicted to email. This worries me for two reasons. The first is the sheer strength of my compulsion. I must hit the ‘get mail’ button at least a hundred times a day.
