Google Top Property in September, Entertainment, Education Sites See Fall Boost

According to the latest data released by comScore’s Media Metrix service, September showed a visible shift from the summertime to the fall season online.

“As summer fades and fall begins, Americans shift their focus back to school and take comfort in their TVs as season premieres and fall sports dominate the tube,” said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president at comScore. “With nearly half of the U.S. online population visiting television sites in September, it is clear that more than ever before Americans are turning to the Web for entertainment.”

CWTV.com saw the biggest boost in the number of its unique visitors in September compared to August with 5.4 million visitors, a 191 percent increase. FunnyorDie saw its audience increase to 6.3 million in September, a 74 percent boost, while Causes.com saw its audience increase to 5.4 million, a 69 percent boost.

HotChalk experienced a 64 percent boost in its audience (12.6 million) while ABC Television experienced a 52 percent boost (6.9 million).

TV Guide Online Network, Univision.com, Pearson Education, Alloy Digital Network and Liberty Media Holding Corporation all saw significant month-over-month boosts in their audiences in September.

Entertainment – TV was the top gaining site category in September as its audience grew 17 percent to 95.6 million. Education – Information saw its audience increase 15 percent to 72.3 million unique visitors during the month.

Retail – Computer Software and Sports saw increases of 14 percent in their respective category audiences.

Google Sites was the top Web property in September with 164.6 million unique visitors, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 159.8 million and Microsoft Sites with 133.2 million. AOL LLC was fourth with 100.3 million visitors while Facebook.com held onto its fifth spot on the list with 95.5 million visitors in September.

Ask Network had 93.3 million visitors, followed by Fox Interactive Media with 85.6 million, eBay with 70.2 million, Amazon Sites with 68.7 million and Wikimedia Foundation Sites with 67.9 million.

ComScore notes that ESPN surged nine spots to finish at No. 30 with 28.8 million visitors in September.

In comScore’s Ad Focus ranking, AOL Advertising topped the list with 181.2 million unique visitors, or a 91.3 percent reach. Yahoo! Network was second with 176.2 million visitors, or an 88.8 percent reach.

Google Ad Network was third with 171.2 million unique visitors, or an 86.3 percent reach, followed by Tremor Media – Potential Reach with 167.9 million visitors, or an 84.7 percent reach.

There were 198.4 million unique U.S. Internet users in September, according to comScore.
