Online Advertising in January
by Jason Hahn

Nielsen Online recently unveiled a quick peek at the online advertising landscape in January. The business-to-business, software and Web media industries experienced big boosts in ad impressions, while some familiar companies topped the sponsored link impressions list.

  • The business-to-business industry saw its total impressions in January jump 125 percent month-to-month to 4.9 billion. Software saw its ad impressions more than double to 3.6 billion, while Web media saw its impressions climb 61 percent to 30.1 billion.
  • The struggling automotive industry’s total impressions in January dropped 65 percent from December to 3.3 billion in January. Hardware and electronics saw its impressions drop 55 percent to 2.6 billion, while consumer goods experienced a 21 percent drop in impressions to finish the month with 8.1 billion impressions.
  • The financial services industry, despite its well-covered trials in recent months, finished January as the biggest in terms of total impressions with 31.2 billion, followed by Web media (figures above) and retail goods and services, with 24.9 billion impressions.

There were a total of 159.1 billion total ad impressions in January, according to Nielsen.

  • eBay finished January as the company with the most sponsored link impressions with 782.0 million. adidas AG was second with 724.1 million impressions, while Spark Networks Inc., which houses dating communities like JDate, was third with 720.4 million impressions.
  • InterActiveCorp drew 660.9 million sponsored link impressions in January, Vivendi Universal S.A. had 559.9 million impressions and Amazon.com finished the month with 524.2 million impressions.
  • Viacom Inc., NexTag Inc., e-Unity Corp. and Zencon Technologies LLC rounded out the top 10 companies in terms of sponsored link impressions in January.
  • Microsoft and Yahoo! were 11th and 12th, respectively, while Google was 15th.

Mobile ads are continuing to garner attention, and rightfully so. According to a recent report released by AdMob, mobile ad impressions worldwide increased 8 percent to 6.8 billion in January.

The report noted a 132 percent boost in mobile ad impressions in Western Europe, to 550 million.

  • AdMob also highlighted WiFi mobile network access in the U.S., noting that California generated the most WiFi traffic, accounting for 18 percent of the country’s traffic, followed by New York with 14 percent and Texas with 8 percent.
