Google, Microsoft, eBay Popular in the U.K.
by Jason Hahn

Bucking a trend that usually sees a decreased day-to-day media consumption during the summer holiday season, the total online population in the U.K. actually reached its largest size ever in July. With 31.8 million unique online visitors, July was a strong month for online properties in the U.K., according to recent comScore World Metrix figures.

In terms of the total number of unique visitors, Google held onto the top spot with 28.2 million unique visitors in July, which reflected a 2% increase from June’s 27.7 million visitors. This indicates a reach of 89% of the total online population in the U.K.

Microsoft sites were second with 26.9 million unique visitors in July, a 1% increase from June’s 26.8 million visitors. This shows a reach of 85%.

eBay was third on the list with 22.1 million unique visitors in July, reflecting no change from June. Yahoo! sites ranked fourth with 20.8 million unique visitors in July, a very small change from June’s 20.7 million.

BBC sites (18.9 million), Ask Network (14.6 million), Time Warner Network (14.9 million), Fox Interactive Media (13.2 million), Amazon sites (12.5 million), and Wikipedia sites (11.7 million) rounded out the top 10 list.

In terms of the fastest gaining properties in July, cinema Web site Odeon.co.uk took the top spot with a 49% increase in its audience, thanks to the summer movie season. Lastminute.com, a travel site, experienced a 30% growth in its audience, while Facebook.com saw a 26% increase in its audience size.

Cheapflights Sites (22%), Disney Online (22%), First Choice Holidays PLC (19%), Play.com sites (19%), NEXT Group (18%), Dixons Stores Group (17%), and WordPress (16%) rounded out the top 10 list for the top gaining Web properties in the U.K. for the month of July.
