Top Web Properties in May

May was a month that included the beginning of the summer movie season, Mother’s Day, and the start of major political debates. According to comScore Media Matrix this meant that May 2007 was a good one for movie information, e-commerce, and political sites.

Movie-related sites saw an uptick in their traffic to the tune of 12% compared to April, which meant that they saw 40.8 million visitors in May. MovieTickets.com (55%) and Fandango.com (50%) saw the biggest jumps in traffic, bringing each to 5 million and 7 million visitors for the month, respectively.

Sites related to flowers, gifts, and greetings saw an 11% increase in May traffic, which brought the sector 35.6 million visitors. Trilegiant Corporation sites, which include 1-800-FLOWERS.com, saw a 365% jump in its traffic, bringing them 5 million visitors in May. Mother’s Day also brought a 6% increase in traffic for jewelry, luxury goods, and accessories Web sites, for a total of 16.9 million visitors.

Political sites saw an increase in May traffic of 17%, bringing them 9 million visitors in May. Politico.com experienced a 162% jump in traffic for the month, or 648,000 visitors. MoveOn.org’s traffic jumped 246% in May, bringing it 689,000 visitors, mostly due to an online petition to gas price increases. BarackObama.com (up 13% to 298,000 visitors) and HillaryClinton.com (up 3% to 217,000 visitors) also saw stronger May numbers.

In terms of percentage change from April, the Politics category saw the biggest increase in traffic at 17%, followed by Tickets (12%), Flowers/Gifts/Greetings (11%), Training and Education (10%), Retail – Movies (7%), Classifieds (7%), Travel – Information (7%), Car Rental (6%), Teens (6%), and Jewelry/Luxury Goods/Accessories (6%).

Yahoo! Sites remained the most visited Web property in May, with about 130.5 million unique visitors. Time Warner Network held onto its number two spot with 122.7 million visitors, followed by Google Sites with 120.0 million visitors, Microsoft Sites with 113.9 million visitors, and Fox Interactive Media with 82.3 million visitors.

eBay (79.4 million), Amazon Sites (51.6 million), Ask Network (50.1 million), Wikipedia Sites (48.7 million), and New York Times Digital (43.6 million) rounded out the top ten list. Amazon Sites and Ask Network each gained one spot in the top ten.

In the Ad Focus rankings, Advertising.com remained at the top with a reach in the U.S. of 87%. Yahoo! (73%), ValueClick (73%), Tribal Fusion (68%), and Casale Media Network (67%) rounded out the top five. Blue Lithium (66%), Google (64%), AOL Media Network (64%), Connexus – TrafficMarketPlace (59%), and Specific Media (56%) all notched top ten spots on the list.
