YouTube Top Online Video Brand, Hulu Second in September

According to the latest Nielsen report on online video, the total number of streams in September increased by nearly 25 percent year-over-year while YouTube beat out Hulu as the top online video brand.

There were 139.3 million unique online video viewers in the U.S. in September, according to Nielsen, a 12.3 percent year-over-year increase and a 0.1 percent month-over-month increase.

More than 11.0 billion streams occurred in September, a 24.8 percent increase from last year, but a 3.0 percent dip from the previous month.

The average viewer was responsible for 79.1 streams during the month, an 11.1 percent year-over-year increase, but a 3.2 percent month-over-month decline.

Time per viewer was at 195.2 minutes in September, a 24.8 percent year-over-year boost, but a 4.7 percent drop from the previous month.

YouTube was the top online video brand in September with regards to the total number of streams with 6.7 billion. Hulu followed behind with 437.4 million streams, while Yahoo! had 228.5 million streams during the month.

MSN/Windows Live/Bing finished the month with 180.1 million streams, followed by Fox Interactive Media with 139.6 million, Nickelodeon Kids and Family Network with 127.7 million, Turner Sports and Entertainment Digital Network with 123.7 million, MTV Networks Music with 116.8 million, ESPN Digital Network with 114.7 million and Facebook with 110.4 million.

YouTube also boasted the largest number of unique viewers with 106.2 million in September, followed by Yahoo! with 30.1 million and Facebook with 23.2 million.

MSN/Windows Live/Bing attracted 18.1 million unique viewers in September while Fox Interactive Media attracted 14.3 million viewers. Hulu took hold of 13.5 million unique viewers in September.

Nielsen defines a unique viewer as “anyone who viewed a full episode, part of an episode or a program clip during the month. A stream is a program segment.”
