Google, Facebook are Top Web Sites at the Start of 2010
by Jason Hahn

According to data recently released by Experian Hitwise, Google and Facebook are topping quite a few different lists at the start of 2010.

In the company’s list of the top 20 Web sites, Google is the big cheese with 6.82 percent of all visits for the week ending Jan. 9, 2010. Facebook trailed behind with 6.46 percent of all visits, while Yahoo! Mail was third with 3.79 percent. Yahoo! (3.43 percent), MySpace (2.43 percent), YouTube (1.89 percent), MSN (1.82 percent), Windows Live Mail (1.64 percent), Yahoo! Search (1.15 percent) and Bing (0.96 percent) rounded out the top 10.

Experian Hitwise also noted that Google Maps was the most-visited travel site for the same week, receiving 14.57 percent of all visits to the “Travel” industry. MapQuest followed with 8.31 percent, while Expedia was third with 3.36 percent.

Bank of America topped the list of the top banking sites for the same week, followed by Chase.

In the real estate industry, Realtor.com received 5.71 percent of all visits to that category during the same week, followed by Zillow with 3.25 percent and Rent.com with 3.19 percent.

Facebook was the top social networking site with 47.87 percent of all visits to the “Computers and Internet – Social Networking and Forums” industry, followed by MySpace with 18.04 percent and YouTube with 14.03 percent.

Google, Yahoo! and Bing were the top search engines, in that order, when ranked by volume of searches and the number of visits.

“Facebook” was the top overall search term for the four weeks ending Jan. 2, 2010, according to Experian Hitwise, as it claimed 1.56 percent of all clicks. “Myspace” was second with 0.89 percent, followed by “youtube” with 0.80 percent, “facebook login” with 0.72 percent and “craigslist” with 0.62 percent.

The company also looked at which sites saw the most clicks for the search term “tiger woods.” It found that Tiger Woods’ site received 9.83 percent of all clicks for that term, followed by Google News with 8.86 percent, Yahoo! with 7.10 percent, Yahoo! News with 5.91 percent and Wikipedia with 3.59 percent.

According to Google’s 2009 Zeitgeist report, “twitter” was the fastest rising term on Google.com, followed by “michael jackson,” “facebook,” “hulu,” “hi5,” “glee,” “paranormal activity,” “natasha richardson,” “farah fawcett,” and “lady gaga.”
