Google, Microsoft Popular in U.K., Facebook Growing

In August, Google attracted 28.3 million unique visitors in the U.K., or about 88.8% of the U.K.’s total online audience (ages 15 and older), according to recent comScore numbers. Microsoft trailed close behind with a unique audience of 26.8 million, which is about 83.8% of the total online audience across the pond.

eBay was third on the list with 21.6 million unique visitors in August, or 67.5% of the total Internet population in the U.K. This was a drop of 2.4% from July.


Yahoo! placed fourth with a total unique audience of 21.0 million, or 65.9% reach. BBC was fifth with 18.6 million unique visitors in August, while Ask.com Network (14.8 million), Time Warner (14.3 million), Amazon.com Sites (13.3 million), Fox Interactive Media (13.0 million), and Wikipedia (11.5 million) rounded out the rest of the top 10 list.

Amazon.com Sites saw the biggest improvement from July with a 6.3% increase.

The total online audience in the U.K. in August was 31.9 million, just a slight increase from July’s 31.8 million figure.

In terms of growth from July to August, Facebook topped the list with an increase of 18.3%, bringing it a total unique audience of 9.0 million, from its audience of 7.6 million in the previous month.

Premium TV experienced a 17.1% gain in August, bringing it an audience of 3.1 million for the month.

Disney Online (16.4%), WordPress (11.6%), News International (10.3%), Shopzilla.com (10.2%), British Sky Broadcasting (10.0%), Priceline.com (8.6%), National Lottery (8.3%), and The Carphone Warehouse Group (7.0%) filled in the rest of the top 10 list for gaining Web properties in the U.K. in August.
