Social Networks

Tagged, Facebook and Bebo See Huge Growth
by Jason Hahn

According to recent figures released by comScore, social networking is continuing to gain steam across the globe. Tagged, Facebook, and Bebo in particular saw significant growth from June 2006 to June 2007.

In terms of total unique visitors in June 2007, MySpace was the clear king with over 114 million visitors, compared to 66.4 million visitors in June 2006. This reflected 72% growth from last year.

Facebook’s total unique worldwide audience was 52.2 million in June 2007, a 270% increase from last year’s 14.1 million figure. While MySpace is clearly the dominant leader in the social networking realm, these numbers lend further support to the sentiment that Facebook is sexier right now than its larger counterpart.

Hi5 garnered a total unique audience of 28.2 million in June, a 56% increase from last year’s 18.1 million figure.

Friendster’s total worldwide audience was 24.7 million in June, reflecting a 65% jump from last June’s 14.9 million.

Orkut attracted an audience of 24.1 million in June, which was a 78% increase from last year’s 13.6 million.

Bebo’s total unique audience in June was 18.2 million, reflecting 172% growth from last June’s total audience of 6.7 million.

Tagged drew a total unique audience of 13.2 million in June, which was a rather large 774% increase from last year’s audience of 1.5 million.

"It would appear that social networking is not a fad but rather an activity that is being woven into the very fabric of the global Internet," said Bob Ivins, who is the executive vice president of international markets at comScore.

Tagged was also the leader in terms of year-over-year growth for worldwide average daily visitors. It saw its average daily audience grow from 202,000 last June to 983 million this June, a growth of 386%. Bebo saw growth of 307% in this arena, while Facebook realized growth of 299%.

MySpace and Facebook were the only two of the top seven social networking sites to have the most popularity in North America. Hi5 and Bebo were the most popular in Europe, while Friendster was most popular in Asia Pacific by a long shot. Orkut was the most popular in Latin America, and Tagged was the most popular in Asia Pacific.
