Google Continues Lead in Search

According to both comScore qSearch and Nielsen Online, Google has maintained its lead in the U.S. search market in May 2008.

comScore reports that Google’s share of core searches was 61.8% in May, reflecting an increase from April’s 61.6% share. Yahoo! also increased its share from 20.4% in April to 20.6% in May, while Microsoft saw its share drop from 9.1% in April to 8.5% in May.

AOL LLC’s share of queries in May was 4.5%, a decline from April’s 4.6%, while Ask.com had a share of 4.5% of core searches in May, an uptick from April’s 4.3%.

According to comScore, 10.8 billion queries were conducted by users in the U.S. during May, reflecting a 2% increase from April’s 10.6 billion queries. Google handled 6.7 billion of these queries.

Meanwhile, Nielsen reports that Google’s share of searches in May was 59.3%, which reflects year-over-year growth of 15.4%. Yahoo!’s share was 16.9%, reflecting a year-over-year loss of 13.8%.

MSN/Windows Live handled 13.3% of all searches in the U.S., reflecting year-over-year growth of 72.4%, while AOL Search grabbed 4.1% of all queries, a 15.6% decline from last year. Ask.com’s share of searches in May was 2.1%, an 18.4% increase from last year’s share.

According to Nielsen, about 8.0 billion queries were conducted in May, 4.7 billion (59%) of which were carried out at Google.
