Nearly 13 Billion Mobile Banner Ads Served in Q2 2010
by Jason Hahn

According to the latest quarterly report from BuzzCity Mobile Internet Advertising Network, nearly 13 billion mobile banner ads were delivered on its network during the second quarter of 2010, marking a huge increase from the previous quarter.

The “BuzzCity Global Mobile Advertising Index” for Q2 2010 found that more than 12.8 billion advertiser banners were served up on its network, reflecting a quarter-over-quarter increase of 61 percent.

The top 20 countries on its network accounted for 82 percent, or 12.5 billion, of these ads.

Indonesia was the top country in the second quarter with 4.4 billion mobile banner ads delivered, reflecting growth of 52 percent from the previous quarter, according to BuzzCity, which is based in Singapore.

India was second with 2.2 billion ads, up 98 percent from the first quarter. Meanwhile, the U.S. was in third with 752.4 million mobile ads delivered, up 62 percent from the 465.2 million ads delivered in the prior quarter.

South Africa was fourth with 591.3 million ads, up 65 percent, followed by Vietnam with 271.1 million ads, up 273 percent.

Kenya (234.6 million), Canada (202.2 million), the U.K. (191.1 million), Saudi Arabia (177.3 million) and Brunei Darussalam (166.0 million) rounded out the top 10 countries by banner ads served.

These numbers from an international company paint a different picture than the one from AdMob in May. According to the company recently acquired by Google, the U.S. led the way with 8.3 billion mobile ad requests in May, accounting for 40.3 percent of all requests.

India was second with 2.1 billion ad requests, while Indonesia was third with 1.1 billion.

According to AdMob, the most popular mobile device in Indonesia was the Nokia 5130, which accounted for 3.7 percent of all ad requests in May, followed by the Nokia E63 with 3.4 percent and the Nokia N70 with 3.1 percent. Nokia claimed 52 percent of the Indonesian device market in May, according to AdMob.

In the U.S., the Apple iPhone accounted for 17.2 percent of all ad requests in May, followed by the iPod Touch with 15.9 percent and the Motorola Droid with 7.5 percent.

A recent survey conducted by ABI Research found that 28 percent of U.S. mobile phone users access the mobile Internet at least once a day. This was up from 16 percent in December 2008.

The survey also found that 27 percent of mobile phone users who access the mobile Internet have clicked on a mobile banner ad or text link, up from 21 percent in December 2008.
