Facebook, Google, Bank of America, Realtor.com Lead the Way
by Jason Hahn

According to the latest figures from Experian Hitwise, Facebook and Google dominated the Web for the week ending Saturday, Aug. 7, while some familiar names led the travel, banking and real estate categories.

Facebook received 9.47 percent of visits during the week ending Aug. 7, according to Experian Hitwise. It was followed by Google with 7.38 percent, Yahoo with 3.75 percent, Yahoo Mail with 3.54 percent and YouTube with 2.74 percent.

MSN (1.76 percent), Windows Live Mail (1.55 percent), MySpace (1.48 percent), Yahoo Search (1.27 percent) and Bing (1.20 percent) rounded out the overall top 10 websites for that week.

For the four weeks ending July 31, Google was the top search engine with 71.43 percent of all searches, followed by Yahoo with 14.43 percent, Bing with 9.86 percent, Ask.com with 2.32 percent and AOL with 1.19 percent.

By visits, Google still ranked first with 66.18 percent, followed by Yahoo with 11.40 percent, Bing with 10.74 percent, Ask.com with 2.18 percent and AOL with 1.16 percent.

Google Maps was the top travel website for the week ending Aug. 7, taking 15.42 percent of all visits to the industry, according to Experian Hitwise. It was followed by MapQuest with 8.88 percent, Expedia with 3.29 percent, Southwest Airlines with 2.12 percent and Priceline.com with 1.98 percent.

Bank of America Online Banking topped the list of banking sites for the week ending Aug. 7, with 7.34 percent of visits to the category. It was followed by Bank of America (7.06 percent), Chase Online (6.50 percent), Chase Banking (4.71 percent) and Wells Fargo – Online Banking (4.22 percent).

Facebook, as expected, was the top social networking website for the same week with 58.13 percent of all visits to that industry, followed by YouTube with 16.80 percent, MySpace with 9.06 percent, Twitter with 1.16 percent and Yahoo Answers with 0.89 percent.

Besides Facebook Questions and the growing cloud of competition forming at the Google campus, maybe the most interesting Facebook-related updates are happening via a third-party interface. Wowd is the newest kid on that block, as it unveiled its free software client that offers users a more customized and streamlined interface with which to traverse the sometimes-murky waters of the big social networking site. Straightforward real-time search is one of its key features.

The advertising possibilities are intriguing, though without enough traffic it's all a pipe dream. Also, the likes of TweetDeck and Facebook itself offers some pretty stiff competition.

Realtor.com topped all real estate websites for the week ending Aug. 7, with 5.69 percent of visits to that industry, followed by Yahoo Real Estate with 5.36 percent, Zillow with 4.02 percent, Trulia with 3.13 percent and Rent.com with 2.82 percent.
