Nearly $20 Billion in E-Commerce Spending, ‘Green Monday’ Expected to be Huge
by Jason Hahn

According to recent figures released by comScore, nearly $20 billion in e-commerce spending was recorded during the first 41 days of the November to December 2009 holiday season, with Monday expected to be a record-breaking spending day.

From Nov. 1 to Dec. 11, $19.9 billion was spent on non-travel retail online spending, a 3 percent increase from $19.3 billion during the same time span in 2008.

Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, saw $318 million in spending, a 10 percent increase from $288 million on the same day last year. Meanwhile, Black Friday, Nov. 27, saw $595 million in online spending, up 11 percent from $534 million on the same day in 2008.

Cyber Monday, Nov. 30, saw $887 million in online spending, a 5 percent increase from $834 million on the same day last year, according to comScore.

For the most recent week ending Dec. 11, $4.6 billion was spent on e-commerce purchases, up 4 percent from $4.5 billion during the same week in 2008.

“Monday, December 14 – otherwise known as Green Monday – is likely to produce our heaviest online spending total for the season and represents our best opportunity to finally surpass that elusive $900 million spending threshold,” said Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman, in a statement. “The early part of this upcoming week should bring us the heaviest online spending days of the season before consumers refocus their attention on brick-and-mortar retail locations to finish up their holiday shopping.”

Green Monday is defined as “the Monday with at least 10 days prior to Christmas,” according to comScore.

The company also listed the ten heaviest online retail spending days on record in the U.S., since comScore began tracking e-commerce spending in 2001.

Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2008, saw $887 million in online spending, just a hair beyond the $887 million spent on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009 (Cyber Monday).

Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, was third with $886 million in spending, followed by Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 (Green Monday) with $881 million, Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 (Green Monday) with $859 million, Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, with $852 million in spending and Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 (Cyber Monday) with $846 million.

Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009 ($828 million), Tuesday, Dec., 2, 2008 ($823 million) and Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007 ($819 million) rounded out the top ten list.

Approximately $8.3 billion in online coupons (via the Internet, e-mail and mobile) will be redeemed this year, according to Borrell Associates. This figure is expected to increase more than 50 percent to $12.7 billion in 2010 and to $22 billion by 2014.
