iPhone, Internet Explorer Lead Browser Markets
by Jason Hahn

Ireland-based StatCounter recently released browser market share figures.  The iPhone (and iPod Touch) is the most popular mobile browser used for Web access in the U.S., increasing its market share by 64%, from 0.14% to 0.23% between December and March, after just six months of existence.  Globally, the iPhone and iPod Touch expanded their Web browser market share from 0.03% to 0.08%, putting Apple second behind Nokia (0.25%).

Nokia is second in the U.S. behind the iPhone and iPod Touch with 0.01% of the market.  Even without the iPod Touch, the iPhone’s share is a strong 0.18% in the states.

In the overall browser market, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still holds the leadership position, albeit narrowly.  IE boasts 44.5% of the market in the U.S., followed closely behind by Mozilla’s Firefox, which has 43.9% of the U.S. market.  On the global stage, however, IE has a comfortable lead over Firefox (59% vs. 33%).

Various analysts agree that the main reason for the iPhone’s success in the browser market is its user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing interface.
