A Little Light Reading
We're digging out from one of our annual spring snowstorms here in Denver and for a lot of people a day being snowed in can be a great time to catch up on some reading. Admittedly, reading another new business book isn't necessarily at the top of the 'to-do' list for most online marketers - who would rather focus on optimizing their campaigns, building new landing page, and generally making more money. But, not all business books are created equal and occasionally there are titles that just may be worth your time. So, here are a couple of books you might consider adding to your reading list for your next snow day.
Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hanson
This book may resonate with many affiliate marketers. The authors are the founders of 37signals, a successful web-based app development company. The book introduces a large number of business philosophies/practices they have used to build their company. Why is this any different from the hundreds of other books about starting companies that you can find at your local bookstore? Because their ideas about starting and growing a business are very different from the typical MBA study guide approach. They focus on a number of practices and issues that many small business owners come up against and provide suggestions that run counter to common business ideas. They cover topics like creating a business plan (they say don't), making decisions on the fly (better than not making one), bootstrapping your business (rather than raising capital), and actually doing something rather than just talking about it. The book is set up as a collection of short essays on these and many other topics - many of which are very applicable to affiliate marketers. It isn't a step by step guide to building a business. Rather it is a quick read that may inspire readers to get moving and stop over-thinking every little detail.
Linchpin - by Seth Godin
If you're a fan of off-beat business and marketing books, then Godin's name isn't likely to be new to you. He has made a career out of writing books that challenge the way many people think about business and their place in it. Linchpin is the latest installment in Godin's efforts to get people thinking outside the box and changing the way they work. The stated goal of the book is to get readers to become "indispensible". While many readers will use the concepts to become indispensible within their companies, they can also be applied to people who work for themselves or have their own small businesses (i.e. affiliate marketers). The book is very much about passion and being passionate about what you do in work and life. This is a concept very familiar to successful affiliate marketers. I don't know many affiliates who are truly successful that don't have that inner drive and passion for what they do. Linchpin is another fairly quick read. It is written to be read and enjoyed, not studied like a textbook.
Both of these books may get you looking at your affiliate marketing business in new ways.
