Digital Thoughts
This week’s Trends Report examines the search engine market through the weaving together of search related topics in the news. Here, we look at search and its similarities, differences, and impacts on the affiliate and ad network space.

Politics and the Web
This past week we witnessed the inauguration of George W. Bush the 43rd president of the United States. Whether you're a Democrat in mourning or a Republican in glee, the results from Election Day should not obscure an important shift in America's civic life.

January 2005 Tech Tip
If your organization shares personal information with third parties for marketing purposes, it may need to comply with SB 27, California’s “Shine the Light” Law, which went into effect on January 1, 2005.

Trends
As companies announced their prior quarter and year end figures, much of the recent industry news focused on 2004 being a record year for online advertising with hopes that the momentum would continue into 2005. Now that this year is almost 1/12 complete, news has shifted from reporting last year’s numbers towards identifying and highlighting areas that will impact the numbers for the remainder of this year.

Ring. Ring.
Your partners are frequently put on hold and return calls are often delayed. The blinking AIM, MSN, or Yahoo IM messages are left unattended.

Mays' Take - Argenteen Bone Campaign
A break from Direct marketing talk, The column may be about politics, or sex, religion, lost youth, lost love, or lost lives, but it will be something that relates to you. It will be something that relates to us all.

Scott Rewick’s Tip of the Week

The YFDirect Trust Network

"Simplicity is vital. Be cool. Name your price. Be honest."

Tip Of The Weekk

"When hiring contractors, be sure that they are not really employees.  If you hire a contractor, and he/she works in your office and uses your computers and equipment, and if you monitor his/her hours -- then that person might just be considered an employee by the IRS.  If your 'contractor' is ruled to be an employee by the IRS, then you will pay back taxes, as well a a large penalty.   Be safe, and make sure you follow the law here - it will save you alot of time and money.  Check out the IRS - Common Law Rules, Revenue ruling 87-41, there are 20 factors you can use to determine if your contractor really is an employee.  "
