Given that Holiday
Decorations began being put up before Thanksgiving,
it’s no surprise that keeping one’s mind on work isn’t
always the easiest thing to do, especially with the
holidays only weeks away. It’s like keeping focused
after Ad Tech with Thanksgiving generally right around
the corner. For some reason though, this year isn’t as
similar as years past.

In January
2000, America Online merged with Time Warner. In what
felt like a symbol of the dot com promise, the
mega-billion dollar merger now almost seems like the
beginning of the end. During the bust, few legitimate
companies received criticism as persistently as AOL
Time Warner. Investors complained, employees moaned,
and most advanced users simply regarded them as the
internet for dummies and not in step with the needs of
the market. Given that AOL has lost subscribers for
the past seven consecutive quarters speaks to the
potential truth in that perception.
Lessons from a Giant…
AOL is the founder of the largest online media network the world had ever seen. However, as the internet developed and more companies joined the space, AOL began to slip in its ability to show profit and compete with companies like MSN, Google, and Yahoo.
