A
"Workaholic's" Vacation
By David Fishman
Internet marketers seem to
be “workaholics.” The industry is consistently overrun with
people who need to know who is emailing instant messaging
and calling them at every hour of every 24 hour day. The
internet marketer is always working, while always able to
take time for a personal call. This industry based on the
time line of other industries is at the absolute oldest a
pre-teenager. The collective “we” of the internet marketing
industry are developing the foundation of an industry that
as Googles IPO clearly defines is here, and here to stay.
All industries follow the ebb and flow of up and down times.
There are months when marketing on the Internet is a mad
dash, where the sprinter who runs the fastest wins. There are
quarters that feel more like a marathon or perhaps an
ultra-marathon. For example, When it feels like there is a lack of
consumer interest in "surfing" or focus on the internet durring an
industries down time period. The question
is, for an industry that has just gotten passed the pre-natal
stage and where each person in such a tight nit community
changes the make-up and direction; when does one find time
for a break or for a vacation?

It is imperative that every
person deeply involved with their work take time away from
that work. There is no way to continue to love, focus, or be
productive consistently without finding time for ones self
away from the “daily grind.” It does not make a difference
if one is a spiritual person or completely logical or
pragmatic or some combination, the need to recharge the
creativity, energy, and intensity is a necessary part of
continuing to be a successful marketer.
The United States holiday
calendar is a perfect place to start looking for a good time
to take a break from being an internet marketer and spend
that time being a beach bumb. Internet sales, branding, and
marketing, always heat up 5-7 weeks before a major holiday
that is celebrated in the United States by a majority of
Americans, It is also important to note, that during holiday
times, sales, marketing and branding opportunities will
decline as a result of fewer people online.
While it is often difficult
to find the “perfect” time to take a vacation it should not
be ignored nor should it be considered a waste of time. In
order to be more productive and to consistently feel good
about being at work one needs to find time to take a break.
The timing of this break should be a period when the
Internet is on a down turn so that the marketer and the
company do not sense negative feelings about the time away.
Happy travels and look at that calendar carefully.
